Pelham Public Library participates in a worldwide Big Library Read eBook Event
Pilot program runs from May 15th to June 1st, encourages participants to join global reading of eBook

(May 20, 2013) – Pelham Public Library invites the public to take part in the Big Library eBook Read, a pilot program in which libraries worldwide offer a single eBook to their cardholders. The program is designed to unite library patrons from all around the world.

From May 15th to June 1, 2013, anyone with a valid Pelham Library card can borrow the eBook The Four Corners of the Sky by New York Times bestselling author Michael Malone for free from the NH Downloadable Books Consortium at http://nh.lib.overdrive.com and read on all major devices, including Kindle® and iPad®.

Over 7,500 libraries in 10 countries from five continents are participating. Readers are invited to join the book discussion on Twitter using #BigLibraryRead.

Spotlight on Community Events:

Pelham Elementary School will be hosting Sigmund Brouwer and his Rock and Roll Literacy campaign on Wednesday & Thursday, May 29th & 30th. All members of the community are invited to join us for a family presentation on the evening of Wednesday, May 29th at 6pm at PES when he will share new ways to engage children in literacy. The night will be full of music, fun, and every child who brings a parent or caregiver will receive a FREE BOOK.

Join the Friends of the Library!

FLIP meets Tuesday May 14, 2013 at 6pm. The group helps plan book sales and other successful fundraisers to bolster the library program budget. Did you know FLIP paid for the children’s area rug, chairs, the Up All Night program, supplies for the Adult Idle Crafter’s group, almost all the museum passes and much more!? FLIP does so much for the library and we need your help! Join us to plan fundraisers or lend a hand at our next event.

Plant a Row for the Hungry

Are you a gardener with a very successful garden and don’t know what to do with all of your extra produce? Are you a new gardener and would like some tips to help your garden be successful? At the Pelham Library we are inviting all gardeners, regardless of age or level of experience, to join our Plant-a-Row for the Hungry garden initiative. On May 7^th at 3:30pm we will host our Kick-off Event and invite all for a fun afternoon filled with Information about the program, a gardening workshop, and crafts for the whole family. Plant-a-Row is a national initiative to provide hungry families with fresh, nutritious produce. The idea is really quite simple: when you’re planting your garden this year, add an extra row (or even just a plant!) to your garden and donate the fruits of your labor to those who are in need. The Pelham Food Pantry will gladly accept donations of fresh produce and the library will track the number of pounds of produce that we donate. To register call the library at 635-7581 or email lgratton@pelhamweb.com. Check our website for ongoing details as the summer progresses.

We will also be raffling off a Compost system as a fundraiser for the Pelham Food Pantry. Tickets are just $5.00 and all funds will go to the pantry.

We wanted to draw attention to this amazing resource. The Digital Public Library of America is a portal to the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums. Think about all the collections and incredible information housed in the Library of Congress, Smithsonian, public libraries, historical societies, Universities and colleges and so much more.
The DPL provides a way to access the items, articles, and objects part of our cultural heritage and has worked to make them available and searchable on the web. According to the DPL website, this resource is “far more than a search engine, the portal provides innovative ways to search and scan through the united collection of millions of items, including by timeline, map, format, and topic.” How awesome is that? As content on the web becomes more restrictive, the DPL is working to keep our public library and museums free and accessible online. Check it out! Here is a very cool collection of Boston Sports Templates housed in a variety of museums and archives across the country.

Local Pelham Author Titus Plomaritis Discusses and Signs his New Book: Titus – Thursday, April 25 at 6:30pm: Join local author Titus Plomaritis as he discusses the colorful stories of his past as an area football star. Copies of his book will be available to purchase, and a book signing will follow his enthusiastic discussion.

Hope for Children with Disabilities Workshop
Thursday April 25, 2013 at 6:00pm

Some estimates state that as many as 1 in four children face some form of disability. Many disabilities are “silent” and might be easily dismissed as “shyness” or “lack of motivation”. How are these issues affecting your life, school, church, or community? Participants will gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by youth with disabilities and how adults can respond in constructive, inclusive, and encouraging manner. The workshop is designed to give participants a view into the daily experiences of children with unique challenges and will leave you better prepared to make a difference. The workshop is being led by Diane Andrews. Diane hosts a monthly support group for Parents with Special Challenges at the Pelham Public Library. All are welcome.
